Lead Lined Panel Installation Advice

Guardian is not an authorised entity to specify site installation techniques, but several methods are commonly used.

The Lead lined panels should be fastened at a maximum of 200 mm centres at the edges of each sheet, and at a maximum of 300 mm centres at the intermediate studs with appropriate countersunk screw fixings.

50 mm wide strips of sheet Lead of the same Lead thickness should be applied to each of the joint studs using a standard type of construction adhesive, prior to installing the Lead lined panels.

These strips of sheet Lead will provide a 25 mm overlap with the adjoining sheets. Each fastener will be covered with a Lead disc of approximately 10 mm in diameter and equal in thickness to the Lead laminated to the panel.

This eliminates the possibility of radiation leakage at the point of fastening and should be applied using a fast drying construction adhesive.

When installing Lead lined panels, all cut outs, seams and penetrations will require sheet Lead or Lead plate to ensure continuous shielding throughout the room. Proper installation of additional Lead wherever penetrations are created, will eliminate potential leaks and ensure total protection.

Additional sheet Lead can be supplied to easily allow for the proper shielding of penetrations such as receptacles, light switches, ducts and telephone/data cables.

Lead Thickness

The Lead thickness is generally specified by the authority responsible for the operational equipment and the protection levels required to contain the emitted radiation.

It is the installing contractor's responsibility to ensure that no radiation leaks are evident and that all penetrations and junctions are constructed so as not to provide opportunity for X-rays to penetrate the surrounding walls and fittings.

A number of suggested and recommended methods of construction are provided as follows to assist with construction details at penetrations, internal and external corners.
